| MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE UNTO THE LORD, ALL THE EARTH: MAKE A LOUD NOISE, AND REJOICE, AND SING PRAISE. SING UNTO THE LORD WITH THE HARP; WITH THE HARP, AND THE VOICE OF A PSALM. (PSALMS 98:4-5)
What is Sacred Harp Music?Visit the FASOLA and Warren Steel links below for a more comprehensive answer to this question. A short version, taken from the perspective of one singer, might read as follows: "Sacred Harp involves common people coming together to sing old hymns, acappella style, with great enthusiasm, using music composed of distinctively shaped notes, led by individuals drawn from their midst, all in an inward-facing square." Motivations for singing this music are as varied as the singers that sing it. I am drawn most to those that sing as a form of praise. For them, the music touches the soul. Sacred Harp music contains lyrics that are direct, about the unredeemed sinner's plunge toward Hell, Christ's shed blood, and salvation for believers. Yet Sacred Harp is not a religion, denomination or cult. Rather, it is music with a fundamental Christian message that is sung by people of immensely varied backgrounds and faiths. A friend of mine once said that Sacred Harp music is not a religion, but singing it can be a religious experience. I could not agree more.
